From June 20-23, Atlanta's westside area came alive with the energy and enthusiasm of the 2nd Annual National Great Girl Meet-Up (NGGMU). This vibrant event brought together 18 young girls, aged 10-15, and their guardians for four days of learning, empowerment, and fun. With an impressive roster of 25 presenters, three vendors, and nine mentors, the NGGMU was a true celebration of girlhood.
A Retreat Like No Other
The NGGMU was designed to be more than just a retreat. It was a dynamic community where the young participants, known as Great Girls, engaged in a series of workshops and activities aimed at fostering confidence, resilience, and informed decision-making. Sessions covered a wide range of topics, including courageous conversations, mental health, nutrition, financial literacy, anti-bullying strategies, and career exploration. Each session was crafted to help these young girls grow into confident and knowledgeable individuals.
The event was designed for both the girls and their parents, making the experience more memorable for everyone. The girls created lasting memories with their moms, while the moms had the opportunity to focus on personal development and learn more about effective parenting.
The impact of the NGGMU was evident in the enthusiastic feedback from the participants. Descriptions of their experience ranged from "inspiring" and "uplifting" to "thought-provoking" and "transformative." These testimonials highlight the event's success in creating a supportive and empowering environment for young girls.
A standout moment of the NGGMU was the inaugural fashion show, where the Great Girls showcased international fashions. The event was not just about modeling; it was a collaborative effort where some girls took on roles as stylists, hosts, and organizers. Others captivated the audience with a dance routine they had perfected earlier in the day. The fashion show was a testament to their creativity and teamwork, leaving a lasting impression on everyone involved.
While the Great Girls were immersed in their activities, their guardians attended sessions tailored to their needs. These workshops covered topics such as effective communication with girls, anti-bullying support, self-care, and managing behaviors in middle and high school. A relaxing paint & sip activity provided a welcome break, allowing the adults to recharge and connect. These sessions ensured that the guardians were well-equipped to support their girls' growth and newfound confidence.
The excitement for the next NGGMU is already building. The 2025 event promises to be even more inclusive, with plans to expand the age range and introduce new topics. There are also plans for activities specifically for dads, reflecting the event’s commitment to engaging the entire family. As the NGGMU continues to evolve, attendees can expect even more surprises and opportunities for growth.
